French Apple Pie

Easy recipe for creating a classic dessert. Perfect pastry holds a pie filling made from sugar, flour, nutmeg cinnamon, and thinly sliced tart apples.
Ingredients -
Pastry:
1 cup Flour
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon Shortening
2-3 tablespoons Cold Water

Pie Filling:
3/4 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Flour
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
6 cups thinly sliced pared Tart Apples

Topping:
1 cup Flour
1/2 cup Firm Butter
1/2 cup Brown Sugar

 
Preparation:

Pastry:
1. Add flour and salt to medium bowl.

2. Cut shortening into flour mixture with fork.

3. Sprinkle water into pastry dough mixture 1 tablespoon at a time.

4. Mix until all flour is moistened and dough almost cleans side of bowl.

5. Gather pastry dough into ball.

6. Press into flattened round on lightly floured wooden cutting board.

7. Flour rolling pin.

8. Roll dough approximately 11 inches in diameter.

Pie Filling:
1. Stir together sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Combine with tart apple slices.

2. Spoon into pastry-lined pie pan.

Topping:
1. Mix flour, butter and brown sugar for topping until crumbly.

2. Spread topping evenly over apples.

3. Bake 50 minutes. Cover pie crust edges with aluminum foil last 10 minutes, if browning too quickly.

To produce the flakiest crust, be sure to chill all the ingredients, including the flour.

Cut the butter or shortening into your dough mixture only to the point that the mixture resembles small peas in size. Going beyond this, reduces the flakiness when you bake your crust.
